On the First Sunday of Christmas we jump from the Birth of Jesus to an event that happens when Jesus is 11 years old. At first this jump seems odd, especially when next week we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany and are back in Bethlehem for the arrival of the three kings! But this jump illustrates a simple fact - that in his birth Jesus enters into the life of a human family (Some church traditions name this Sunday "The Holy Family"). Here we see an account of an ordinary family, Mary and Joseph chatting to friends assuming Jesus is with the other children, he, on the other hand, is still in Jerusalem asking questions.
The moment every parent dreads when they realise their child isn't where they thought it was.
In the Incarnation the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, a real child in a real family - just the same as ours today.
