Prayers at Rushall Parish

A prayer during the holiday week

God of openness and love, there have been times when we have wanted to be only with our own circle of friends, and have not been willing to look beyond ourselves to welcome others whom you love.
Forgive us, and unlock our hearts and minds, that we may be inclusive and daring, and willing to go where you would lead, and meet with those you have called; for the sake of your kingdom.
Amen.

Previous Prayers

A prayer during a time of challenges

God of all ages and all stability,
change can be exciting and threatening,
division can be dangerous and protective,
dogma can be safe and stifling,
difference can be fun and frightening.
Help me to discern the difference,
and to be a helper not a hinderer
to the work and growth and mission of your kingdom.
I ask this in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

A prayer of companionship

Thinking of our reading from Acts on Sunday 12th where Tabitha's friends mourn for her and summon Peter for comfort

God of hope and consolation,
when death comes to someone I love, may I be brave –
brave enough to cry,
brave enough to reach out for comfort,
brave enough to talk about the one I miss so much.
And may I be strong enough to ask for help,
strong enough to be there for others when they are
grieving too.
I ask this in the name of your risen Son, Jesus.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Lord Jesus, please be gracious to me as you were to Peter, for I have denied you – in my heart, in my relationships, in my way of life. I have not lived as though I loved you.
And yet I do. I really do. I really do.
Call me by name, as you called Peter, that the sound of your voice may quieten my fears and restore my confidence. Wherever my journey takes me, whatever I am called to do, however many times I fall down.
Lord, hold out your hand to me, and be by my side, every day, every moment, every step.
Amen.

A prayer in troubled times

Come, Holy Spirit, bring peace in our world.
Bring peace in this nation.
Bring peace to my community.
Bring peace to my home.
Bring peace to my heart.
Come, Holy Spirit, come now.
Amen.

For Holy Week

We are sorry, gracious God,
for the times when we have praised you with our lips
but our actions have given the lie to our words.
We are sorry that sometimes the words that we speak
do not reflect the attitudes we hold.
We are sorry that our Sunday joy and resolution
do not always last the whole week through.
Forgive us, and enable us to be sincere,
genuine and consistent in our discipleship
– as your love is sincere, genuine and consistent.
Amen.

As we enter Passiontide

Lord, guide us,
as we press on towards the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
May we be single-minded in pressing ahead.
May we be strong in persevering,
and may we always be encouraged by you and your love.
Amen.

A prayer as we reach the halfr way point of Lent

Thank you, God, for loving me.
Forgive me, God, for turning away.
Thank you, God, for welcoming me back.
Amen.

As we near the half way point of Lent

We turn away from all that is wicked and unrighteous,
from all that causes pain and suffering to others and to God,
and from all that is not loving and caring.
We turn to you, O God, in your mercy.
We seek your abundant pardon.
We joyfully receive your forgiveness.
Amen.

For the second week of Lent

I am God’s child.
God loves me.
God will care for me – always.
Thank you, God.
Amen.

For the First Week of Lent

Give us the refuge we need, O loving God,
refuge beneath your wings.
Protect us from all that we fear, O faithful God,
by shielding us from danger.
Guard us from temptation, O gracious God,
that we may choose the right path.
Be with us, and make your presence known,
O compassionate God, on every step of life’s journey.
In Jesus’ name we pray.
Amen.

As we enter into March

When ailments beset me and I feel weak,
when illness knocks me off my feet,
when the years weigh upon me heavily
and my gait falters as I walk less steadily;
let me then remember, O Lord:
I shall be renewed, not just restored.
Amen.

As the days grow longer

Each day, Lord, help me to wake from sleep as I shall one day wake from death – in the knowledge of your presence and the hope of resurrection. So, may my faith shed light from another world, to lighten the cares of this one.
Amen

As we begin to look towards Lent

Lord, as others have passed it on to me, help me to share the gospel. Let what is in my heart overflow into my life, so that the risen Jesus may be seen and known through me.
Amen.

As we turn from the crib to the cross

Lord Jesus,
in our lives, help us to be as dedicated as Anna and Simeon were to your will, patiently waiting for the right moments.
We know that, sometimes, we will know the joy of your presence as Anna and Simeon did when they saw you in the Temple.
Help us to remember those moments, so that they might keep us going when times are hard.
Lord Jesus,
help us to be as dedicated to God as you were,
willing to follow through to the end.
Amen.

That we may recognise the parts we have to play

I pledge myself to play my part in your plans, O Lord.
I immerse myself in the belonging of your body, the Church.
I will not withhold the gifts I have, however humble,
but serve willingly and well in the work of your kingdom.
Amen.

As the cold weather comes once more

I do not ask for the spiritual gift I would have, Lord,
for I am not a magician seeking powers.
I am a follower of Christ seeking to know what you would have me do.
Therefore, I know that through the Holy Spirit, the gift will choose me,
and I will be grateful.
Come, Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Remembering Baptismal Grace

Cleanse me in the depths of your love, O Lord,
that I might emerge to glimpse heaven.
Brush me with the wings of your grace,
and lead me from the wilderness to fullness of life.
Amen.

As we journey into a new year

What shall be the star to guide me, Lord,
and what shall be my dream?
Speak to me as you will, so I may walk in your ways and lay the
gifts of my heart, mind and soul at your feet. Amen.

For a new year

Loving God,
may the best that I have learned from the past, enrich my future;
may the mistakes I have made in the past not mar my future;
may your truth from the past be my truth for the future;
and may I grow in faith and maturity day by day, moment by moment, and know that yesterday, today, tomorrow and for ever: you are my God!
Amen.

A prayer for Christmas

Timeless God,
sometimes it is easier to be critical than to be joyful,
easier to complain than to rejoice,
easier to hold back than to enjoy.
Lord Jesus, fill my heart with wonder, hope and peace
that I may rejoice in you my God and my Saviour
this Christmas and every day.
Amen.
