Prayers at Rushall Parish

A prayer for the week

Loving God,
when I look at the world, it seems there is
no unity, only division, no trust, only hatred,
no tolerance, only violence.
Help me to see it through your eyes.

When I look at your Church, it seems
so small and so divided, so marred and fragile.
Help me to see it with your eyes.

When I look at myself, I see
only failure, not worth, only fear, not courage,
only complacency, not commitment.
Help me to see with your eyes –
that I may change all that I can,
inspire that which is good,
and draw others to the foot of Christ’s cross.
Amen.

with humility, respect and openness.

A prayer for the week

Heal me, Lord Jesus, I pray,
from all the hurt that has come
from the words spoken over me, about me or to me,
that have been damaging and not affirming:
words that have held me back;
words that dismantled my confidence;
words that I have falsely believed to be true.
Help me to hear your voice in the silence,
to begin again where I have given up,
to believe where I have doubted,
and to be an encourager of others in all that I do and say –
to your glory.
Amen.

Epiphany Week

Loving Jesus,
we are not wise like those who came to your stable.
We do not have gold, or expensive gifts.
We have not seen a star or met with a king.
But, Lord Jesus,
we bring you the best of all we have,
and we ask that you will bless us, encourage us and help us to be your people in your world today, to your glory.
Amen.

As we enter 2020

God of Joseph and Mary,
God of the prophets
and the gospel writers,
God of all –
may my words,
my thoughts,
my actions
honour you.
May I follow you;
may I find you,
as they did,
not cradled in your mother’s arms,
but reigning in my heart.
Amen.

In Christmas Week

Lord God, in all the decisions I need to make,
give me wisdom and strength.
Help me be brave enough to change my mind
if that is what I need to do.
May I be open to your will at work in me.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

As Christmas draws even nearer

Jesus, help me to see you.
Show me who you are.
Remind me of the things you have done,
how you can turn situations upside down,
and that nothing is impossible for you.
As I go through my days,
help me to recognise your work in my life,
to see what you have done for me.
Lord, increase my faith in you.
Amen.

As Christmas draws nearer

Lord, as the Spirit rested on Jesus,
filling him with wisdom and understanding,
may the Spirit also rest on me,
teaching and guiding me,
reminding me of Jesus and all that he has done.
May your Spirit give me what I need
for every day and every task,
big or small, extravagant or mundane.
Holy Spirit, fill my life today
and grow good fruit in me.
Amen.

A Prayer for the first week of Advent

O Lord, clear away any darkness
that resides in my life.
May I put on the armour of light,
be assured of your salvation,
and be determined to follow your ways.
Remind me of your faithfulness
and inspire a new hope in my heart.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

As we draw to the end of the church year

Jesus, you alone are above all things
and in you all things hold together.
In you I find my peace, my hope, my joy.
When my eyes grow dim
and my life gets cluttered by other things,
restore my vision.
Remind me that you are bigger
than all the ‘stuff’ my life feels made of,
and that I can depend on you.
Thank you, Lord.
Amen.

A prayer for November

Lord, in my life today, I pray that you would increase the love I have for you and for others, that I might live a life worthy of your call, so that the name of Jesus might be glorified in me.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

For the week

Forgive me for boosting my ego at the expense of someone else, Lord.
Help me to be honest about the attributes and achievements to which I can lay claim,
for the sake of my self-confidence and worth;
but to do it without putting other people down.
Let me build bridges rather than barriers,
and as you are merciful to me,
so may I be to my fellow sinners.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Grant me a voice for justice, Lord, and the courage to use it.
May it be persistent and heard above the clamour of the world,
not for my own sake, Lord, but for those whose voices are drowned out, and those whose courage falters in the face of life’s unfairness. Amen.

A prayer for this week

Lord, let unconditional love be my only agenda. I reach out for the good of my sister or brother, not for anything I may gain from helping them, or even any benefit I may win for your church. Lord, let my mercy and compassion reflect the pure and simple nature of yours.
Amen.

A prayer at harvest time

God of the harvest,
so much depends on timing:
when to gather in the crops,
waiting for the best time,
but watching the weather anxiously,
nervous of everything being destroyed.
Often, we see none of this uncertainty in our food supplies.
Be with everyone whose livelihood depends on the harvest,
and guide their decisions for the benefit of all of us.
Through your Son, Jesus Christ.
Amen.

For Michaelmas

Father in heaven,
the angels sing by day and night around your throne:
‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.’
With Michael, prince of the angels, who contends by our side,
with Gabriel, your herald, who brings glad tidings,
with Raphael, the protector, who ministers your healing,
and with the whole company of heaven,
we worship you, we give you glory,
we sing your praise and exalt you for ever.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

I’m just one little person in a big world, Lord. I feel vulnerable and insecure. I need to fit in. Sometimes I do things I’m not proud of. Help me to be strong and not to compromise your teaching.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Help me not to mind my own business, Lord. My brother or sister’s absence from our community is my business. Help me to notice those who have drifted away. Grant me the courage to risk going after them, and show me what I must do.
Amen.

In a confusing world

How can I change the world, Lord?
The world overwhelms me.
I want to hide my face and shut it out.
But it has to begin with me, Father.
The change starts not with the world, but in my heart.
Give me a heart for the oppressed, Lord.
Grant me a passion for justice.
So may I help those who can’t help themselves.
Amen.

As the holidays finish and harvest draws near

As your bounty surrounds me in this harvest season,
so may my heart be bountiful to others, Lord.
May I be caring through sharing,
giving of what I have,
but mostly of what I am:
my life, a gift from you, a gift to others.
Amen.
