Prayers at Rushall Parish

In difficult times

Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy
in this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious and fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Amen.

Previous Prayers

A prayer for the week

Forgive us when we have tried to draw water from elsewhere,
and failed to draw water from you.
Forgive us when we have ostracised those who,
like the woman at the well, are not like us.
Forgive our prejudices towards those on the edge
of our society today.
Forgive us when we struggle to be holy.
Help us, Lord, to love as you love,
and to open our hearts and minds and eyes to all.
Amen.

The Second week of Lent

Lord Jesus, help me to remember
that I belong to you, and you belong to me –
through the gift of eternal life.
Amen.

In the first week of Lent

God of power and might, of knowledge, wisdom and truth:
we thank and praise you that you show us how to overcome temptation
and to keep our focus on you;
we thank and praise you that you never give up on us,
even when we get things wrong;
we thank and praise you that when we go off course,
you lead us back on track.
Thank you, Lord God, for your constant love.
Amen.

As we approach Lent

God of my life’s journey,
of the ups and downs,
of the highs and the lows:
when my footsteps take me to the mountain tops,
may I immerse myself in your mystery,
and turn my face towards your glory,
so that when the valley calls and my world goes dark,
I may be enabled to dig deep
and call upon the richness of that encounter
and stay strong,
even through doubt and fear and aching. Amen.

For the world in all its beauty

Lord,
sometimes it feels as if time is running out for our world, and my faith fails me.
I have lost my way, and cannot find purpose or confidence in my day to day life.
Help me to see beyond the troubles of today and trust you for tomorrow,
that I may enjoy once more the colours, the sounds and the richness of creation
and share them with others – to your glory.
Amen.

to know ourselves more

Holy Spirit,
you know me through and through.
Help me to know myself better –
my strengths and my weaknesses;
my gifts and my frailties;
my passions and my prejudices –
that I may better serve you and those around me,
better pray for my church and my community,
and better witness to your power and your glory.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Loving God,
so often I feel like the weakest link –
at home, at church, at work.
Others seem so strong, so sure, so wise.
Thank you for the gift of Scripture that draws me back to you –
to your strength, your wisdom, your truth –
and renews my confidence and gladdens my heart.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Loving God,
when I look at the world, it seems there is
no unity, only division, no trust, only hatred,
no tolerance, only violence.
Help me to see it through your eyes.

When I look at your Church, it seems
so small and so divided, so marred and fragile.
Help me to see it with your eyes.

When I look at myself, I see
only failure, not worth, only fear, not courage,
only complacency, not commitment.
Help me to see with your eyes –
that I may change all that I can,
inspire that which is good,
and draw others to the foot of Christ’s cross.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Living Lord,
may I greet others in your name
with humility, respect and openness.
May I serve others in your name
with generosity, compassion and integrity.
May I pray for others in your name
with faithfulness, grace and feeling.
And may I identify with others in your name,
and receive your gifts of fellowship, grace and peace.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Heal me, Lord Jesus, I pray,
from all the hurt that has come
from the words spoken over me, about me or to me,
that have been damaging and not affirming:
words that have held me back;
words that dismantled my confidence;
words that I have falsely believed to be true.
Help me to hear your voice in the silence,
to begin again where I have given up,
to believe where I have doubted,
and to be an encourager of others in all that I do and say –
to your glory.
Amen.

Epiphany Week

Loving Jesus,
we are not wise like those who came to your stable.
We do not have gold, or expensive gifts.
We have not seen a star or met with a king.
But, Lord Jesus,
we bring you the best of all we have,
and we ask that you will bless us, encourage us and help us to be your people in your world today, to your glory.
Amen.

As we enter 2020

God of Joseph and Mary,
God of the prophets
and the gospel writers,
God of all –
may my words,
my thoughts,
my actions
honour you.
May I follow you;
may I find you,
as they did,
not cradled in your mother’s arms,
but reigning in my heart.
Amen.

In Christmas Week

Lord God, in all the decisions I need to make,
give me wisdom and strength.
Help me be brave enough to change my mind
if that is what I need to do.
May I be open to your will at work in me.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

As Christmas draws even nearer

Jesus, help me to see you.
Show me who you are.
Remind me of the things you have done,
how you can turn situations upside down,
and that nothing is impossible for you.
As I go through my days,
help me to recognise your work in my life,
to see what you have done for me.
Lord, increase my faith in you.
Amen.

As Christmas draws nearer

Lord, as the Spirit rested on Jesus,
filling him with wisdom and understanding,
may the Spirit also rest on me,
teaching and guiding me,
reminding me of Jesus and all that he has done.
May your Spirit give me what I need
for every day and every task,
big or small, extravagant or mundane.
Holy Spirit, fill my life today
and grow good fruit in me.
Amen.

A Prayer for the first week of Advent

O Lord, clear away any darkness
that resides in my life.
May I put on the armour of light,
be assured of your salvation,
and be determined to follow your ways.
Remind me of your faithfulness
and inspire a new hope in my heart.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen.

As we draw to the end of the church year

Jesus, you alone are above all things
and in you all things hold together.
In you I find my peace, my hope, my joy.
When my eyes grow dim
and my life gets cluttered by other things,
restore my vision.
Remind me that you are bigger
than all the ‘stuff’ my life feels made of,
and that I can depend on you.
Thank you, Lord.
Amen.

A prayer for November

Lord, in my life today, I pray that you would increase the love I have for you and for others, that I might live a life worthy of your call, so that the name of Jesus might be glorified in me.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.

For the week

Forgive me for boosting my ego at the expense of someone else, Lord.
Help me to be honest about the attributes and achievements to which I can lay claim,
for the sake of my self-confidence and worth;
but to do it without putting other people down.
Let me build bridges rather than barriers,
and as you are merciful to me,
so may I be to my fellow sinners.
Amen.

A prayer for the week

Grant me a voice for justice, Lord, and the courage to use it.
May it be persistent and heard above the clamour of the world,
not for my own sake, Lord, but for those whose voices are drowned out, and those whose courage falters in the face of life’s unfairness. Amen.
